There has been much debate in recent times about the worth of marketing through Google AdWords. Recently we received a $100 gift card in the mail from Google to try the service for ourselves. Would it be worth the time and effort to experiment? Then again, who could refuse $100 in free marketing from the powerhouse of search engines? Yes, we took our free gift and signed up for AdWords.
The first reaction was just how easy AdWords is to use. Anyone already administrating a web site with affiliate marketing or other product-driven revenue will have no trouble navigating the control panel. Google certainly knows how to make a user-friendly interface and when you get stuck, they have an extensive FAQ area to help untangle the mysteries.
But did it work? That’s what you want to know right! At first we were skeptical because some of our blogs are new and not yet fully charged with useful and sufficient content. Even so, we found a drastic up-tick in visitors, even to the sites that had little to offer.
The traffic to BlogConduit.com alone jumped 200% in the month of June, mostly due to the AdWords banner ads driving people to our site. Other sites saw modest gain in traffic as well. Accordingly, the day after our $100 was exhausted (in about a month) some of the sites traffic dove off drastically. Some however are maintaining more readership than before the campaign began. This leads us to believe that while the AdWords ads drove traffic to our site, visitors saw the value in our content and began linking to us. The newer sites have not retained any traffic from the campaign, but that is due to the fact that while our ads did drive traffic, there simply isn’t much there to come back for. This will change.
Overall, our opinion here at BlogConduit is that we cannot answer for you whether or not AdWords is a worthy marketing tool for your site. While we did raise our traffic percentage through the campaign, income derived from that traffic did not increase proportionately. If you desire more exposure to readers, AdWords will definitely bring you visitors, but it is up to you to create quality content and sales channels that will offset the cost of marketing. But, that is of course the design of the PR world after all. If you are willing to shell out a few hundred dollars to simply get noticed, AdWords will no doubt help you to achieve your goals.
